What awaits you in your IDC

This is a breakdown of the 15-day PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), including the final Instructor Examination (IE).

Day 1 & 2: Check-up / Preparation

The first two days are for checking your current status. This includes a review of all 24 skills, a rescue exercise, handling of the DSMB, and a review of your theoretical knowledge.

Day 3 & 4: EFR Instructor Course

During these two days, you'll be trained to become an Emergency First Aid (EFR) Instructor. This is a basic requirement to become a PADI Scuba Instructor. You will learn how to organize and conduct a PADI EFR course, which also prepares you for the PADI IDC.

Day 5 to 13: The PADI IDC

The IDC is divided into two components: the Assistant Instructor Course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor Course. You will learn the entire PADI training system and focus on developing your skills as a professional dive educator. The course is very interactive and includes learning how to give presentations, identify and correct mistakes, and organize training.

  • Practical Presentations:

    • Confined water teaching presentations

    • Knowledge development presentations

    • Open water teaching presentations with two integrated dive skills

  • Academic Subjects:
The course covers 15 different academic subjects, including an overview of the dive industry, PADI standards and procedures, legal liability and risk management, business principles for instructors, and detailed information on all of PADI’s core courses (e.g., Scuba Diver, Rescue Diver, Specialty Diver, Divemaster).

Day 14 & 15: The PADI IE

On these two days, your skills and knowledge will be thoroughly tested by external PADI examiners. The examination covers all the content you've intensively trained for over the last few weeks. It consists of two main parts:

  • Written Exams: This tests your knowledge of PADI standards and dive theory.

  • Practical Exams: You will be tested on various in-water skills to demonstrate your abilities
